The Clare Champion is one of the few independently-owned regional newspapers left in Ireland and has been been operating since 1903.

But with falling circulation figures and financial losses in recent years, staff at Barrack Street in Ennis have been informed of proposed rationalisation plans to cut costs.

This could include as many as 8 staff redundancies, including the entire sub editing department at the paper –  It’s understood sub-editing duties could be outsourced to another company as part of restructuring.

A 30 day period of consultation between management and staff is now underway.

Management at the Clare Champion have been unavailable for comment on the matter, while the National Union of Journalists, which represents staff at the paper have declined to make any statement.
