From June 1st, two new free parking initiatives will be run in Ennis and Kilrush.

In Kilrush, people will be able to avail of two-hour free parking, while in the County Capital, there will be no charge for parking in public car parks after 2pm on Saturdays.

The initiative doesn't apply to on-street parking in Ennis though as council officials want to allow for a flow of traffic during business hours.

Mayor of Ennis Johnny Flynn says the scheme is designed to encourage local people to shop at home.

There's been a broad welcome by businesses in both towns.

The Head of Ennis Chamber of Commerce, Alec Flemming told Clare FM that it's a step in the right direction.

Kilrush Chamber of Commerce has been lobbying for parking incentives in the town over the past number of years.

Jack Kelly from the Chamber is welcoming the announcement and hopes local businesses will get behind the scheme.

The schemes are due to end on September 30th, but if they're successful Clare County Council say they will look at implementing the free-parking initiatives on a long-term basis.
