The Taoiseach has defended the €18 million spent by the Gardaí on security for the visits of US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to County Clare this year.

Leo Varadkar told reporters in Los Angeles ‘it was worth it’.

He says any time a high-profile figure comes to Ireland they are always welcome, and there are benefits for Ireland in doing so.

The Taoiseach said two visits in one year was unprecedented, however, and the Government is talking to the Department of Justice and the Gardaí to see what they can do.
