Clare’s Independent TD says he was increasingly ignored by government after he abstained in the votes for Leo Varadkar as Taoiseach.
Dr. Michael Harty announced yesterday that he will not be contesting the upcoming General Election, after serving as the county’s only independent Oireachtas member since 2016.
The Kilmihil GP has cited the difficulty in fulfilling a commitment to both the Dáil and to his local community as the main reason for his decision.

Dr Harty has spoken of his growing frustration over what he’s described as the failure of the current government to implement obvious solutions to problems and he also feels the political decisions he made had consequences.
