Clare’s Senator is rejecting any suggestion that his party is attempting to buy votes in the upcoming local elections.

Fine Gael’s Martin Conway is reacting to reports that Leo Varadkar is to tell councillors to fight for reduced local property taxes, after a draft version of Taoiseach’s local election manifesto has been leaked.

Councillors can chose to reduce the Local Property Tax by 15% and the Taoiseach last week said he believes even more flexibility should be given.

This is despite recommendations in a Government report to take the ability to reduce the tax away from politicians.

Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Ennistymon Senator Conway has hit out over the leak and says he believes more power should be given to local authorities.
