Clare Senator Hopes Govt Won’t Stumble Into General Election Following Loss of Dáil Majority

Clare’s Fianna Fáil Senator is hoping the government won’t ‘stumble into’ a general election following the loss of the Dáil majority last night.

Last evening, former Education Minister and Fine Gael TD Joe McHugh voted against the government’s revised Defective Concrete Blocks Scheme, after which he resigned the party whip.

This latest development coupled with the resignation of Eoghan Murphy, defection of Marc MacSharry, and suspensions for Patrick Costello and Neasa Hourigan leaves the Government no techinical majority.

But it believes with support from McHugh, the two suspended Green Party TDs and some Independents it can still exercise a working majority and continue to function.

Mountshannon Fianna Fáil Senator Timmy Dooley says the government will have to be cautious that they keep the opposition on side when putting together the budget for 2023.
