Clare Fine Gael Senator Says Coveney No Confidence Motion ‘An Own Goal’ By Sinn Fein

Clare’s Fine Gael Senator believes today’s no confidence motion in the Foreign Affairs Minister will prove to be a political ‘own goal’ from Sinn Fein.

Mary Lou McDonald’s party is to table the motion in Simon Coveney today, following weeks of controversy surrounding the appointment of Katherine Zappone as a UN special envoy.

While it is believed some smaller parties including Labour will support the motion, Dail arithmetic being on the Government’s side will likely see the motion defeated.

Ennistymon-based Senator Martin Conway says while the debacle has been an ’embarrassment’ for Fine Gael, Minister Coveney’s integrity shouldn’t be questioned.
