Plea To Holiday Home Owners To Stay Home As Distressed Lahinch Pensioner Calls For Help

Anyone planning on visiting their holiday homes in Clare for the long weekend is being asked to think of the distress they are causing to local residents.

Clare’s Green Party Councillor Róisín Garvey has said she was contacted by an 83-year-old woman who was in tears, worrying about people coming down from the capital to their holiday homes in Lahinch.

This is despite the Taoiseach urging people not to stray further than 2km from their homes until at least Easter Sunday, as part of efforts to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

In recent weeks, both Lahinch and Kilkee hit national headlines after hundreds of people made their way to the seaside towns for weekend walks, breaking social distancing guidelines.

Cllr Garvey has been telling Clare FM’s James Mulhall that people need to not just think about themselves this Easter, but think of people like this lady, who are fearful of their lives with the virus circulating.

Lahinch hotelier Michael Vaughan says it’s not the first time the coastal village has had issues in recent weeks.

While Health Minister Simon Harris is urging everyone to think like they have COVID-19 and stay at home – and not travel to their holiday homes.
