Plans Unveiled For Major Development On Shannon Shamrock Site

Plans have been unveiled for a major development on the site of a long derelict south Clare hotel.

Limerick-based firm Crescent House Limited has submitted an ambitious planning application for a mixed use development on the site of the former Shannon Shamrock Hotel in Bunratty.

It’s been 15 long years since the doors of the Shannon Shamrock closed for the final time but activity could soon be seen once again on the site of the former jewel in the county’s hospitality crown.

On behalf of Crescent House Limited, HRA Planning is seeking planning permission for a period of seven years for a development which would first and foremost require the demolition of the existing hotel and ancillary outbuildings.

The main aspect of the project is the construction of 67 residential units comprising 47 three-bed houses and 20 two-bed houses.

Planning permission is being sought for a convenience retail store as well as six commercial units for retail and office space.

The application states that the existing conference centre building will be retained and form part of a future phase of development.

It’s noted that due to the presence of Lesser Horseshoe Bats during the summer months, a Bat Derogation License has been applied for, and plans to construct a bat house are included in the application.

Additionally, the applicant states its intention to carry out ancillary site development works including car and bicycle parking, bin storage, signage, two ESB sub-stations and public lighting.

A natura impact statement is included in the application and submissions must be in by January 18th of next year, with Clare County Council required to reach a decision on the development by February 8th.
