Plans To Take Lough Derg Supply To Dublin Set To Cost Almost 1 Billion Euro

Irish Water has placed a 900 million euro price tag on a proposed pipeline from the River Shannon to supply the Midlands and the East of the country.

The utility has confirmed it's preferred option which will see water being extracted from the Parteen Basin and piped to Peamount in Dublin.

It's estimated that 330 million litres per day will be required to supply the region by 2050 – the equivalent of 125 Olympic swimming pools.

Managing Director of Irish Water, Jerry Grant says water will be treated within a mile of abstraction in Tipperary.

Meanwhile, a Whitegate Councillor has described the move as the best of  bad lot for comunities living on the northern side of Lough Derg.

Councillor Pat Burke says there remains strong opposition against the pipeline, amidst fears of the longterm impact.
