Plans for a major new salmon farm near the North Clare coast have been withdrawn by Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

The agency had planned a 15,000 tonne operation off Inis Oírr, but has now withdrawn its licence application in light of a new Sustainable Aquaculture Development strategy.
This sets limits regarding the scale of offshore salmon farms and was contrary to the size of the proposed development in Galway Bay.
A number of fishermens' groups had strongly opposed the plans.
