Pipe bomb discovered near Barefield

Two men are being quizzed by Gardaí following the discovery of a suspected pipe bomb on the outskirts of Barefield

During a routine patrol officers stopped a car –  acting suspiciously on the Ennis side of the village close to the M18 Motorway exit at around 1 o’clock.

Upon discovering what appeared to be a viable explosive device, they sealed off the area and the  Army Bomb Disposal Team called in.

The device was then made safe and taken away for forensic examination and the road reopened to traffic at around 6 am

Two men, arrested at the scene in connection with the incident are being held at Ennis Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
