The Passport Service is reminding people to check their passports and lodge renewal applications early.
Last year the Department of Foreign Affairs issued 630,000 passports – more than half of which were processed in the summer months.
At the moment 8,000 applications are lodged a week – this will more than double to to 19,000 a week in July.
The Department suggests people should at all times know where their passport is, warning people risk missing out on a holiday by waiting until the last moment to look for it.
