The 79 year old is understood to have become disruptive on board an Air Canada jet which had been travelling from Frankfurt to Toronto.

The plane was around 1,000km North-West of Shannon when its flight crew decided to turn around.

The woman in question had been travelling in the first class cabin, and reports say she had to be restrained before the plane landed.

It arrived at Shannon just after 8 o'clock last night, where she was arrested and taken to Shannon Garda Station, before she was subsequently released.

A file is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
