The penalty issued to Uisce Éireann for the Ballymacraven river fish kill has been described by a West Clare Councillor as insufficient to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Uisce Éireann has been ordered by Ennis District Court to pay the maximum fine of €5,000 per offence after being found guilty of two water pollution charges which resulted in the deaths of 2,000 fish near Ennistymon last May.

The ruling means the water utility will have to pay a combined €10,000 fine as well as Inland Fisheries Ireland’s legal costs which amount to €5,477.

Lahinch Green Party Councillor Liam Grant believes given the budget allocated to Uisce Éireann each year, the fine will have no significant impact on the body.
