The level of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital has shot up heading into the weekend.
The latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation shows there were 82 admitted patients waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick during morning rounds, 33 of those in the Emergency Department.

The overall figure is close to three times higher than the next busiest facility; St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, where 31 patients were waiting on trolleys.
In total, there were 270 patients waiting for beds at hospitals across the country today.
