630 people were waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick in February, a drop of 79 on the same month last year.

But figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show the Dooradoyle facility remains the third busiest hospital in the country, with only Beaumont and St Vincent's Hospitals in Dublin recording higher levels of overcrowding.

The figure represents a 17% rise, however, on February 2014, and is almost four times higher than the same time ten years ago.

The INMO is welcoming the reduction in overcrowding in the past year but says the figures confirm a continuing crisis within the country's emergency departments.

The organisation says its continuing to implement a system wide escalation and recruitment policy but that a further national meeting will take place on Wednesday next week to review local implementation of the recent WRC agreement.
