High numbers of patients have been presenting at University Hospital Limerick over the past three days, leading to the levels of overcrowding being the worst in the country.

The level of overcrowding at University Hospital has dropped slightly this evening with 19 people currently waiting on trolleys in the Emergency Department, down from 25 this morning.

However the Dooradoyle facility remains the busiest in the country for the third day running.

In a statement to Clare FM, UL Hospitals Group says the hospital has been experiencing high numbers of patients attending the facility, partilcularly those in the older age profile, and it regrets that any patient has to wait for admission to a bed.

The hospital is continuing to follow the new System Wide Escalation Framework agreed by the National ED Taskforce in December.

Additional patients have been placed on wards at UHL and in other hospitals across the Group, including Ennis, to reduce pressure on the ED during this very busy period.

While, all elective surgery, with the exception of cancer cases, is being kept under review.
