Martin Conway is reacting to an increase of 93 people on the live register in the past month.

There was a slight increase in the number of people signing on in Clare in October with 7,332 people now claiming some form of umemployment assistance, a monthly rise of 23.

However, North Clare has accounted for all of this increase, with dole queues there increasing by 93 people during the month.

Clare Senator Martin Conway says the rise is regrettable and  points to an over-reliance on the tourism industry.

The Ennistymon Senator says plans are in place to target jobs growth within the tourism industry but admits efforts need to be made to ensure year-round employment:

Elsewhere, falls of 44 were recorded in Ennis, as well as 22 in East Clare, and 4 in the West of the county.

Kilrush Councillor Ian Lynch is welcoming the fall in numbers but says its a clear indication that a plan specifically targetting employment in the west of the county needs to be put in place.

The latest CSO figures show that the total number of people signing on is down by 9.1% on the same time last year.
