Opposition remains in Clare against a proposed pipeline from the river Shannon to supply the midlands and east of the country.
Irish Water has confirmed it's preferred option, which would involve water being collected from Parteen Basin and treated at Birdhill, before being piped to Peamount in Dublin.
The water is to be supplied to 40 per cent of the country's population and it's estimated that it will require 330 million litres of water per day by 2050 – the equivalent of 125 Olympic swimming pools.
Whitegate Councillor Pat Burke believes that while the measure is the best of a bad lot for communities on the northern end of Lough Derg, opposition will continue due to the impact it could have in years to come
