Opposition hit out at radically reduced property tax waiver list

The government’s been accused of being unfair and inconsistent in cutting down the number of ghost estates eligible for a property tax waiver by nearly 90 percent.

Out of the 23 Clare unfinished development originally exempt from the now defunct household charge, only 4 in Killaloe, Sixmilebridge and Mountshannon will now escape paying the upcoming levy.

Nationally the numbers have been cut from over 13 hundred to just 421 ghost estates.

The government insists the new list published by the Department of the Environment today reflect the fact that work is either ongoing on near completion on many developments but the opposition disagree.

South East Clare Councillor Michael Begley believes that estates like Westbury and Clonlara which are now excluded should at least get a stay on paying up until construction is finished
