Opposition hit out at new VAT Rate

Fianna Fail has described the new VAT rate which came in at midnight as a mistake by the government.

From today the VAT on most goods and services, such as cars, electronic goods and luxury items has been raised to 23 per cent – an increase of 2 per cent.

Health premiums and both car and home insurance are also higher now – while the controversial new household charge of 100 euro has officially come into affect.

Commuters and motorists will notice higher bus and rail fares, along with increased parking fees, tolls and petrol prices.
