Aldi Stores Ireland Ltd. has been given planning permission by Clare County Council to build what would be its third Clare outlet on the site of Ennistymon Mart.

Clare Marts has previously confirmed that it has sold the site, for a fee reported to be around 1.5 million euro, but this decision led to anger amongst farmers.

The Save Ennistymon Mart Committee was among eight objectors and they are one of those who have now confirmed that they will appeal the Council's decision to An Bord Pleanala.

Its chairman is Pat O’Donoghue says will lead to the loss of traditional shop fronts and to the loss of employment in the town.

The eight objectors also included former Mayor of Clare Flan Garvey, who has criticised the Council's decision to give permission for the supermarket.

An Bord Pleanala is now expected to receive submissions on the case in the coming weeks, and a decision is likely to take a number of months.

Both Aldi and Clare Mart have declined to comment when contacted by Clare FM today.
