Council area staff, Clare County Fire Service, Civil Defence and Irish Defence Forces have been working day and night over the past number of weeks in an effort to aid flood defence efforts, particularly in Springfield.

Up until Christmas Eve, Clare County Council says its total spend on flood-related issues was approaching one million euro – since then, that figure has been exceded, but Council CEO Tom Coughlan says the humanitarian cost far outweighs the financial cost.

Council staff, emergency services and the army have been working around the clock in an effort to prevent homes from becoming submerged, particularly in Springfield, Clonlara where eight homes remain isolated by flood waters.

Tom Coughlan also says lessons have to be learnt from the current crisis.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney visited Springfield yesterday as homeowners there continue to fight waters from the River Shannon, which have approached levels last seen in 2009.

The cabinet is expected to approve a substantial increase in funding for flood relief works when it meets tomorrow and residents in the Clare community want to ensure they're not forgotten.

The ESB say that the flow of water through Parteen Weir will remain at 470 cubic metres per second today and that a further review will be carried out again tomorrow.

Water levels on the lower river Shannon at Clonlara have fallen slightly since their peak on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the President has visited the commnuity of in Labane, in south Galway, another area where houses are under threat of recurring flooding.

President Higgins praised locals for their spirit, and said environmental concerns must not be set aside for short-term flood relief.
