One death every nine days has been recorded as a result of drug use in the Mid-West.

New figures from the Health Research Board shows the number of people dying of overdoses in the region has risen significantly over the past decade.

There was a 46% rise in drug related deaths with 389 in the Mid-west between 2004 and 2014 – more than 200 of those were in the last five years.

Clare consultant psychiatrist Dr Mosajee Bhamjee has compared the figures here to those of Columbia.
