Nurses’ Union Claims Hospital Overcrowding “Out Of Control”

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation claims the number of patients on trolleys, chairs and other inappropriate bed spaces in hospitals is out of control.

The latest analysis from the nurses’ union shows University Hospital Limerick was by far the most overcrowded in the country once again today, with 109 admitted patients waiting for beds during morning rounds.

It represents a significant reduction on yesterday’s figure of 138, however it’s still 31 more than the next busiest facility; Cork University Hospital, where 78 were on trolleys.

They were among 681 admitted patients across the country waiting for a hospital bed this morning.

The INMO is imploring the next Government to be conscious of the impact of overcrowding on patients, nurses, midwives and healthcare workers and insists assurances must be given that next winter will be different.
