Number Of Ukrainian Refugees Now In Clare Passes 4,000 Mark

The number of Ukrainian refugees now living in Clare has passed the 4,000 mark.

Around 1 in 16 people from the war torn state who’ve made their home in Ireland are being accommodated in this county.

The Central Statistics Office calculates the number of Ukrainian arrivals to these shores by data on the number of PPS numbers that have been given out to date by the Department of Social Protection.

It shows 4,006 people have now settled here since the onset of the conflict in February.

Only five counties – Dublin, Kerry, Cork, Donegal and Galway – have higher numbers of people from Ukraine than Clare.

More than 1,700 people from Ukraine are in the Ennistymon electoral area, with 861 in Ennis and 851 in Shannon.

380 people from Ukraine are living in the Kilrush electoral area, and a further 211 are in the Killaloe region.

Meanwhile, a Clare-native politics lecturer is accusing Russia of ‘state terrorism’ due to its escalation in missile strikes over the last number of days.

Professor of Politics at the School of Law and Government DCU and Newmarket on Fergus native Donnacha O’Beachain claims Putin is using winter as a weapon in the conflict.

An Ennis-based Ukrainian native has dismissed the possibility of a ceasefire at any point in the near future.

Mariya Nikashanova who’s originally from the city of Irpin but has made her home in the county town, says past instances mean her native country don’t trust Russia.
