Number of Clare Suicides Doubled Last Year

Suicide rates in County Clare doubled last year.

According figures released by the Central Statistics Office – 16 Clare residents took their own lives in 2012, up from 8 and 12 in the previous two years.

The statistics show that men in Clare are far more likely to die by suicide, with 13 such deaths recorded amongst males in the county.

The rate of suicide here is also higher than the national average.

Seperately, the CSO date also shows Clare mothers gave birth to 1690 children last year- and the women’s average age was just over 32

There were 18 more girls born than boys, while a third of all children were born to unmarried parents. This figure is slightly lower than the average for Ireland and Munster.

708 deaths were registered in the county last year -78 more men than women and with diseases of the circulatory system were the most common cause.
