Number Of Homeless Adults In Clare Rises Nearly 17% In Year To January

The number of homeless adults in Clare has increased by nearly 17% in the year to January.

The latest report from the Department of Housing shows that 65 adults in this county accessed emergency accommodation last month.

Homelessness in the MidWest, which in this report refers to Clare and Limerick, has increased by a quarter between this January and last.

There were 414 homeless adults in the region last month, compared to 321 the January before.

The numbers presenting to the Clare Homeless Action Team (CHAT) has also risen this January.

193 presentations were made to the team last month, a 25% rise on the 150 who sought help last January.

The homeless action team has expressed concern at the high number of repeat presentations, a figure which it says has increased significantly.

There were 164 repeact contacts this January, compared to 120 in January 2022.

The number of families accessing emergency accommodation in the county is also on the rise in the last 12 months.

18 families (consisting of 63 adults and 34 children) used emergency accommodation in Clare last month.

This is again a 25% rise on the 14 families who used such services last year.

The figures come as the government has yet to make a decision as to whether to extend the current moratorium on evictions beyond March 31st.
