The National Transport Authority is examining including a rail spur to Shannon in the Limerick-Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy.
The project has been long mooted for the area and has been included in the current National Development Plan, with any spur coming off the current Limerick to Ennis route.
NTA officials are to rubber stamp the strategy for a second round of public consultation shortly, which will lay out plans for transport in the Midwest region for the next two decades.
Clarecastle-based Fine Gael Deputy Joe Carey, who’s Chair of the Oireachtas Transport Committee on Shannon Airport, says there’s a renewed focus on the project from Government.
