NRA warns new Killaloe Bridge could cost taxpayers on the double

The National Roads Authority has warned that plans to construct a new crossing of the River Shannon at Killaloe could undermine the Limerick Tunnel.

The NRA says the proposed crossing would divert traffic away from the tolled tunnel, and in turn force the taxpayer to further subsidise it’s operation.

Already, the tunnel is costing the state around 10,000 euro a day under the terms of the public private partnership agreement, due to lower than expected traffic levels.

NRA spokesman Sean O’Neill says officials need to be aware of the wider implications of the project.
