A North Clare Hotelier is urging the Government to seriously consider lowering the VAT rate for the tourism sector to 5% for the coming year.

It comes as the Government is considering a reduction in the rate in the July stimulus, though the lower rate of 9% seen during the recession is unlikely, with government sources reportedly saying there won’t be any drastic moves this year.

Past President of the Irish Hotels Federation, Michael Vaughan says the lower rate is necessary for certain businesses in parts of the county who can’t secure support under the Wage Subsidy Scheme.

But the Lahinch Hotelier has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that any reduction would make a difference to struggling businesses.
