North Clare Farmers are hoping a major European award for the Burren will lead to the extension of a scheme worth almost one million euro to them each year.

Minister for Arts and Heritage Jimmy Deenihan is in Carron today to accept the ‘European Diploma of Protected Areas Award’ from the Council of Europe, which recognises the sustainable management of the Burren.
It’s the first time an Irish region has won this award in it’s 50-year history.
The honour recognises the European significance of the Burren, as well as schemes like the Burren Farming for Conservation Programme which has been introduced there in recent years.
