Nimbyism In Clare Said To Be “Absolutely Contributing” To Soaring Rents

A Clare auctioneer claims a not-in-my-backyard mentality is “absolutely contributing” to soaring rents here.

The conversation has once again turned to boosting housing supply as a new report has found the average rent in this county to be almost €1,500.

Daft.ie’s latest report has demonstrated that Clare still isn’t immune to national trends when it comes to the rising price of rent.

The property website’s final quarterly report for 2024 has revealed that the cost of renting a home here has risen by 8% in 12 months compared to just shy of 6% nationwide.

Those in the construction industry have long identified housing supply shortfalls and rising rents as being inextricably linked.

Douglas Hurley of DNG O’Sullivan Hurley says lands being zoned for residential development aren’t being given access to essential services which is holding up construction.

According to the Central Statistics Office, 539 homes were completed in Clare last year, representing a 33% increase on 2023.

A number of developments in the county are currently being held up by judicial reviews and legal action.

Diarmuid McMahon of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon says individuals involved in these proceedings must take responsibility for the effect this is having on the housing market.
