Ms O’Brien previously ran in the local elections in 2014, narrowly missing out on the final seat in the Killaloe District.

It follows the selection of Deputy Mayor of Ennis, Cllr Mary Howard as the final candidate to represent Fine Gael in Clare and the decision by Kilrush Cllr Ian Lynch to run as an independent candidate this week.

Meanwhile, Shannon Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn has decided against running, citing the financial cost as the main reason for his decision.
