Concerned residents of Stonehall, Newmarket on Fergus are stepping up their efforts against a proposed multi-million euro green energy plant for the area.
Developers say it has the chance to create hundreds of jobs, but those against the plans have expressed concern about possible health and environmental implications.
The controversy centres on an 80 acre parcel of land near Shannon Airport.
Under the Shannon Town and Environs Local Area Plan, which is being drawn up at present, it’s proposed this area be rezoned to allow for ‘a large-scale green/renewable energy development.’
Carbon Sole Industries is proposing to construct an 85 million euro power plant on the site – the facility would use bio-energy and it’s claimed could lead to hundreds of new jobs, including in spin off companies, as well as a significant reduction in carbon emissions.
However, residents in the area have expressed concern for potential noise, health and environmental hazards. They claim it will add pressure to the roads infrastructure there and could threaten the future of Stonehall National School.
A further meeting on the matter is to be held at Stonehall National School tonight.
