A new weather radar system at Shannon Airport is expected to give greater reliability and consistency to local weather monitoring.
The Irish National Meteorological Service has announced that the new system, which will provide more accurate rainfall information to weather forecasters and rainfall radar maps, is now operational.
It’s the first time the radar system at the Midwest airport has been updated since 1996 and is part of Met Éireann’s ten-year strategic development plan to upgrade and expand the national weather radar network.
Project Manager of the Shannon Radar Replacement and Radar Meteorologist with Met Éireann Sinead Duffy, claims the development offers a sophisticated method of detecting changes in weather.
