New school projects may depend on EU funding

While the battle for a new Ennis National School has come to an end today, the Education Minister is warning that hopes of a new primary school in Sixmilebridge may lie in Brussels.

Minister Ruairi Quinn is in Clare this lunchtime, and has already turned the sod on the 6.6 million euro development for Ennis National School on the Kilrush Road, as well as visiting Sixmilebridge National School.

Locals there have been calling for an overhaul of St. Finnchta’s, but the project was omitted from the Government’s five year schools building programme announced in March.

Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Minister Quinn admitted a new school is needed, but said he could make no promises, even if Ireland is given extra funding from the EU.
