A new scheme is on the cards for Clare that would enable selected tenants to purchase modern homes at a discount.
The details were unveiled at the latest meeting of the Social Development Strategic Policy Committee this week.
In the last two years, 20 renters in this county were able to purchase their homes at a discount of between 40% and 60% under the Tenant Incremental Purchase Scheme.
To qualify for this, tenants only need to be making up to €11,000 per year and need to be living in the property for at least 10 years.
In a number of counties, including Limerick, the scheme is available for designated new builds in social housing estates.
Clare County Council Senior Executive Housing Services Officer Pádraig McCormaic says they’re keen to see it rolled out here.
Concern has emerged however, that Clare County Council could struggle to meet its targets when it comes to tackling social housing deficits.
There are currently 50 towns and villages here without any sewerage connection, while the meeting also heard the Killaloe MD only has capacity for another 108 homes.
Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle says the onus is now on central government to provide infrastructure funding and futureproof housing supply.
