Shannon Airport was one of only two airports to record a jump in passenger numbers in the last quarter of last year, when compared to pre-pandemic levels.
The latest CSO figures show more than 360,000 passengers travelled through the county’s airport between October and December, compared to more than 341,400 in the same period in 2019.
Overall, there was a 12% drop in passenger numbers across the year, compared to three years prior, however, as Clare FM’s Brian McLoughlin reports:
The CSO’s Aviation Statistics show Shannon Airport fared better than most in the wake of the lifting of covid restrictions, with numbers using the MidWest facility jumping by 8% on pre-pandemic levels.
367,772 passengers passed through the airport between October and December, compared with 341,416 in the same period in 2019.
Across the year there was a 12% drop in figures, however, with in excess of 1.4 million arrivals and departures overall, compared to just over 1.6 in 2019.
According to the report, London Heathrow remained the most popular route, meanwhile, with 55,432 arrivals and departures in the last quarter of 2022 and 195,802 across the year.
This was followed closely by London – Stanstead, with New York -John F Kennedy, London-Gatwick and Boston-Logan all featuring in the top five services to and from Shannon.
Clare’s airport also handled 14,492 international freight and 2,681 national freight flights between January and December last year.
