New Report Shows More Than 100,000 Calves Born In Clare In 2020

More than 100,000 calves were born in Clare in 2020.

Around two thirds of calves registered in this county last year were in a suckler herd.

The Department of Agriculture’s Animal Identification and Movement System Bovine Statistics Report for 2020 shows a 2 percent increase in calves born in this county last year.

Just over 66,000 of calves here are sucklers, with the remaining 33,000 or so registered as dairy calves.

Only six other counties have a higher percentage ratio of new suckler calves than Clare.

Clare’s herd total on the last day of 2020 was 256,512, which is 4 percent of the national figure.

30 percent of Clare’s herd was more than 4 years old at the time the data was gathered, with a further 27 percent were aged between 6 and 12 months.

Just 2 percent of calves hereare aged between 24 and 30 months.

Around a third of Clare’s herd are Limousin breeds according to the Department, with Freisians and Charolais’ being the next most common in this county.
