The Chairman of Clare County Council's Housing Committee says new measures allowing for social housing projects to be fast-tracked won't solve the housing crisis overnight.

The application process is being streamlined to allow projects worth up to 2 million Euro, or 15 new housing units, be approved in just one step.

The Department of the Environment claims the new system strikes the balance between oversight of public spending and maximum efficiency.

There are over 3,000 people on the social housing list in Clare and while Shannon Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn is welcoming the announcement, he believes more work needs to be done to improve the system.
