The new centre opened to the public a number of months ago, with the ribbon on the project officially being cut this morning.

Nearly half of the funding put up for the works waas from the Our Rural Future initiative under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, says the facility will be availed of by all members of the community in county Clare.

A two storey gym overlooks Lahinch’s promenade at the centre, with heated swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna facilities also available.

It’s believed the project is supporting up to 90 jobs.

Chair of the West Clare Municipal District, Councillor Shane Talty, says the centre is a testament to the hard work of the community.

A second phase of the project has been earmarked, with Minister Humphreys shown those plans today and a funding application set to be submitted.

Secretary of the Lahinch Leisure Centre, Michael Cagney, says while there’s been lots of work done, there’s still more to do.
