New Drink Driving Legislation Won’t Deter Drink Driver Says Clare Vintners President

The President of the Clare Vintners has hit out over new drink-driving legislation, saying it won’t deter drink drivers.

People caught driving under the influence could be banned from driving under the proposals, which have been given cabinet approval.

At the moment, anyone caught drink-driving receive three penalty points as well as a two hundred euro fine but under the Transport Minister’s new proposals, first time offenders would be banned if caught driving under the influence.

Cabinet yesterday confirmed their support for Shane Ross’ new drink driving bill, while Fine Gael has yet to decide whether backbenchers should have free vote.

Clare’s Independent TD has pledged his support for the bill today.

Speaknig to Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Dr Michael Harty says drink driving is simply unacceptable.

The Chairman of the Clare Vintners has rejected the reasoning behind the tougher regulations.

Darragh McAllister has added his voice to concerns that the proposed legislation will prohibit people in rural areas from socialising.

He says the law would instead be too restrictive on people who abide by the law.
