A Sixmilebridge professor believes that new Covid-19 variant is a strong reminder for the public to remain vigilant.
The EG.5 variant, known as Eris, is a descendant of the Omicron strain and is considered “more transmissible than previous circulating variants” but poses no increased health risks than previous strains.
The World Health Organisation has not designated the strain as a variant of concern or of interest but it remains under lesser monitoring.
Former Head of the School of Life Sciences at The University of Nottingham, Prof James McInerney, says although there is no reason for panic, the variant reminds the public that Covid is still around.
