At 11.59 pm on New Year’s eve the order separating the airport from the DAA took effect and just a few hours later a US Aer Lingus flight became the first to transit through the stand alone facility.

Rose Hynes – recently confirmed as the Shannon Airport Authority Chairperson described it as an historic day and an opportunity for the airport to commence a new chapter in its history.

The government is pledging that thousands of jobs will be created by the move while a newly reformed Shannon Development will merge with the airport by July.

Long standing local independent councillor Patricia McCarthy says this part of the process cannot be rushed.
