A new campaign has been launched to ensure landlords in Clare accurately register their tenancies in accordance with the law.
The Residential Tenancies Board in conjunction with Clare County Council has launched the Tenancy Registration Campaign to reduce the number of rental properties not recorded with the board.
The new campaign is hoping to target counties with high levels of potentially unregistered tenancies, with Louth, Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Monaghan and Tipperary also rolling out the campaign.
Research conducted by the Central Statistics Office last year, indicated that approximately 11% of rental properties in Clare that should be registered with the RTB, are in fact not.
This figure was achieved by analysing the discrepancy between 2022 Census records on the numbers living in rented accommodation, versus the number of tenancies actually registered.
Landlords are legally obligated to register tenancies every year, with failure to register potentially resulting in a civil sanction of €15,000 or a criminal prosecution and/or a fine of up to €4,000.
Speaking on the launch of the campaign Director of the RTB, Rosemary Steen, said they will work with Clare County Council to identify unregistered properties and drive compliance throughout 2025.
