The Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District insists it’s vital the powers that be “take their head out of the sand” and realised the extent of drugs use in towns and villages.
It follows a meeting of the Citizens Assembly on Drugs, which heard claims that the legalisation of drugs would prevent crime gangs gaining and maintaining powers.
Shannon Councillor Donna McGettigan, who’s previously called for a low threshold detox centres to be opened in this county, believes legalising drug use, generally, isn’t the answer.
The Sinn Féin Cllr says more diversion models are needed to ensure drug users are sent to health services on their first offence.
