Nearly €650,000 Spent On Renting Prefabs In Clare Schools

Nearly 650 thouasnd euro has been spent on renting prefabs in Clare schools since the beginning of last year.

Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan has told the Dáil that nearly 1,000 euro a day is being spent by the state to allow for prefabs to be rented at 13 schools here.

They are Scoil na Mainstreach in Quin, CBS schools in Ennistymon and Ennis, Mol an Oige in Ennistymon, Ennis Educate Together, Scoil na Maighdine Muire in Newmarket on Fergus and Gaelscoil Donncha Rua in Shannon.

Other national Schools in Ennistymon, Lakyle, Sixmilebridge, Knockanean, Ballynacally are also listed as having prefabs, along with the Ennistymon Vocational School.

The total amount spent on renting prefabs in these schools since the beginning of 2014 is 648 thousand euro.

Five of those prefabs have been newly rented in that timeframe, including three at Sixmilebridge.

As part of the government's capital plan, it is hoped that there will be no long term use of prefabs from 2021.
