The trial of a Ballyvaughan Man accused of murdering Deirdre McCarthy has heard he told Gardaí he killed her and disposed of the 43 year old’s body.
41 year old Colm Deely of School Road, Ballyvaughan has pleaded not guilty to the murder of the guest house worker in March of 2011 and was treated for treated for self-inflicted injuries in the days following the discovery of her body.
The court also heard he made admissions to family members after trying to take his own life.
In interviews with Gardaí Colm Deely said he was lying on the bed with Ms McCarthy when he must have rolled over and was holding her by the neck – when asked by officers if this had caused her dead – the accused said" I’d say so, but I didn’t mean it"
He said he panicked as she wasn’t breathing or answering him and he removed her from the house, put her in the car, and then put her over a wall and heard her roll down to sea.
In cross examination Gardaí agreed Mr Deely’s remarks were "self incriminatory" and that the 41 year old’s manor of disposing of Ms McCarthy’s body wasn’t the most sensible , given it would have been discovered if there was a garda checkpoint.
Also giving evidence Colm Deely’s brother in law Ciaran Clancy said he discovered the accused had tried to take his own life – a day after the guest house worker’s body was found.
Mr. Clancy said the 41 year old told him "I did it. I can’t take it anymore." Under cross-examination, he admitted that he took what Colm Deely had said to be an admission.
The case will continue on Monday.
